ATTRIBUTED TO THE ANTIMENES PAINTER OR HIS MANNER
CIRCA 520-510 B.C.
MEASUREMENT: height 23 1/2" 59.5 cm.

Beautiful and large Attic Black-figured amphora with foot in two degrees, decorated in front with Athena stepping into her quadriga and holding a spear, Herakles holding a club and bow, Dionysos holding vine branches, and Hermes leading the team, and on the back with Apollo kitharoidos accompanied by a feline and flanked on either side by a goddess and satyr, inscriptions in the field, a palmette-and-lotus chain above each scene, rays above the foot, ivy on the sides of the handles, the details in added red and white.

Edward Merrin's son, SAMUEL formally took over the business in 1999, has beBen involved with ancient art his entire life. As a child he frequently visited his father’s gallery and worked there during many summer vacations. Samuel was fascinated by the beauty and history of the objects he handled. After receiving a BA from Tufts University, he worked at The Cloisters Museum and interned at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York.
