January 22, 2012: The Tiger is the spirit of the Indian jungle, the symbol of India's wilderness. Their declining numbers have given environmentalists around India a reason to panic. One of the few initiatives for this campaign has been the Tadoba Tiger Reserve, which is the pristine and unique eco-system situated in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. A lot has been said and done about saving the tiger, but the reason behind this issue in this particular region is something unthought-of. The dilemma here is that of illegal mining, which directly affects the territory of this creature. Divulging deeper into this matter is Arti Kulkarni, who recently won the Ramnath Goenka Award for this particular report on Reportaaz at 8:30 pm on Sunday, 22nd January only on IBN-Lokmat.

llegal mining in India has been an open secret for years and handling this sensitive issue this week is Arti Kulkarni is the winner of Ramnath Goenka Award for this exclusive report of 2009. Companies had been pressurizing the government with regard to coal mining around the Tadoba Reserve. The location of the proposed coal mine fell just under 10 km buffer zone of Tadoba and part of the reserve forest itself. The main road to Chandrapur is prone to activities such as illegal mining and accidental killings of animals that stray in to the open roads. The expanding city and its activities are eating into the corridor that will eventually sever the reserve’s only connection to the central Indian forest landscape through Brahmapuri and Nagzira forests.
Investigating the illegal mining, reporter Arti accompanied by environment experts and villagers visited the area. The issue was dealt with in a sensitive manner and illegal doing efficiently brought to light.
