Resolve to Raise Your Self-Esteem in the New Year

Expert warns of risk to self-esteem from creation of unrealistic resolutions.

We set lofty goals for ourselves in the spirit of New Year’s resolution-making, only to fall well short of achieving them a month or two later. Self-esteem expert, Dr. Kevin Solomons, thinks it’s time to re-assess the importance we attach to this task and learn a lesson from the great Mark Twain who said, “Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.”

“The whole New Year’s Resolution exercise can really wreak havoc on our self-esteem. When we set this incredibly lofty and often arbitrary goals that no reasonable human being achieve - not to mention the fact that we usually set an artificial deadline for their accomplishment – we just set ourselves up for failure!” explains Solomons. “Then of course we end up feeling guilty about abandoning those resolutions come February - hardly a great way to start off the year!”

Instead, Dr. Solomons recommends that we re-evaluate the whole resolution-making process. Instead of using the New Year to beat ourselves up about what we weren’t able to achieve, why not resolve to build up self-esteem and improve quality of life? One way to do that is to choose a resolution that’s likely to be successful. People also shouldn’t view any resolutions they do decide to make as an onerous task that must be achieved on a particular timetable in order in order to validate our own self-worth.

Solomons continues, “Any resolutions you do make should be viewed as an opportunity to take control of your life and work on becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be – something that’s a life-long project! And finally, take the opportunity to reflect on all the positive things on your life. Appreciate yourself just as you are, rather than thinking of all sorts of ways you need to be ‘fixed’.”
