Friday, February 3rd, 2012, CES's cage fighting event at the Twin River Casino will involve an unexpected match-up. Tim O'Connell (a fighter from a small town in Southern Rhode Island) will be squaring off against Sityadtong Kickboxing Academies undefeated Andres 'The Black Shark' Jeudi. Three rounds, one winner.
This 'David and Goliath' bout is made more interesting due to the styles of the individual fighters. Timothy is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert with all of his MMA victories coming by way of submission holds and chokes, while Andres is a seasoned Muay Thai kickboxer (also undefeated in that sport) - with his victories mostly coming by way of knockout.
"To be honest, I don't think people realize that there are skilled MMA fighters in Rhode Island" says Tim during a recent interview. "I think most of the people who've fought Andres have done it wrong, and frankly, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a LOT different that kickboxing, nobody has forced him to realize that."
Tim's confidence is no wavered by the fact that most of the MMA community thinks this is a loosing fight for him. At least in Rhode Island, his supporters feel optimistic about the style match-up between Tim and Jeudi, even given Jeudi's incredible undefeated record. More than anything, the excitement seems to stem from the fact that this fight is an opportunity to 'make it' in the cage fighting world - something most competitors never do.
"Tim has an opportunity to submit Andres Jeudi in front of a big crowd - and that's a huge blessing. If the people in Massachusetts don't think that Tim can take Andres at Twin River, let them come watch! Tim winning this match means his name on the map - so we're all pumped!" Exclaims Joshua Labossiere, follow instructor at Black Diamond Mixed Martial Arts along with Tim.
No matter what happens, the Rhode Island MMA fight itself (February 3rd, 2012 at the Twin River Casino) should prove to be more than entertaining.
