John Canada Terrell, Dashing Flash

“If it’s not on stage or not on the page, I don’t get paid!”, exclaimed Mr. Terrell as he opened his interview with a very comedic poem. This Brooklyn, New York actor has won numerous awards, and has taken the liberty on telling us what he has been up to since his leading role as Flash from the Five Heartbeats.

He recalled back to his earlier years as an actor, when he worked with a man named Gerard Brown who produced the play “Jonan”, which won a number of awards in New York of which Mr. Terrell was a part of the original cast. Also a cast member was Carl Lasalle who went on to do Coming to America and ER.

Legendary Spike Lee’s first film, “She’s Gotta Have it”, was the pivotal moment in Mr. Terrell’s career, however, and he stated that he was very thankful and highly fortunate. Terrell said working with Spike Lee, at that time, was beautiful, because this was his second time working with Spike Lee, and many people don’t realize that. He did a film called “The Great tour of 1946” Ernest Dickinson was the director and Spike Lee was a NYU student, and was the soundman and was the boom microphone operator! “Even though he was still a student then, they had access to the best actors in New York, and we are all just throwing down with the new wave of film makers… It just made sense, so that’s how I met Spike. The reason I got the role for She’s Gotta Have it, was that someone else was casted, but they were expecting an addition to the family and wasn’t able to do it. I just so happened to call and got the opportunity to audition. Four days later I was rehearsing”,- J.C.Terrell.

As of now, he is working on a distribution deal for a future cartoon that he is one of the producers on, and a film called “White men can’t rap”, which was actually recorded 5 years ago, but is possibly going to be promoted under another name. He currently has a television show called “A-time”, which is a taste of Philly about an upscale night club. It will be more along the genre of a Vegas TV show of what happens in a nightclub and casino’s, what stars come in, what drama happens, basically everything, whether it is good, bad, bizarre, or scandalous. He is producing the television show with Chris Mann from the hit series, The Wire. He felt the importance to showcase Philadelphia, being as though he went to Temple University as well as Lincoln University.
When asked if there was anything else that he would like his fan to know about him regarding plays, movies etc., he stated, “I’m more geared towards TV now. I kind of want the money that I deserve after 30 years of acting. If I don’t produce it, I’m working on NBC, CBS or one of those TV networks because that is where my agents are taking me. I still do the urban circuit because that’s where most of my fan base is. I’ve been fortunate enough to do multiple shows, and I love it!”

The former Heartbeat is still a heart throb and hasn’t lost his love for acting. Even after 30 years of acting, he is still as charming as ever, and has the same muscular physique that he did in 1986 in his role as Greer! His next up-coming performance will be July 16th, 2011 at The Marian Theater, in the hit play, “For Better or For Worst”. This play is highly anticipated and has an all-star cast, and tickets are going in a FLASH!
