Let me start my saying that some rain you should really just wait out. Safety on your motorcycle always starts with common sense. Riding in the rain takes on two different categories when you leave in the rain and when you get caught in the rain. The reason we define the two apart from one another is because if you know you are riding in the rain what you wear may be different.

I would like to talk about the surprise storm first. You know the day that starts out sunny without a cloud in the sky. Only to get you eighty mile from the house and then sneak up on you and rock your world. The most important thing I can say is take your time. If your bike doesn’t have a windshield the rain drops pelting you in the head feel like some kind of Chinese torture. Most stores carry bandanas so stopping in and buying one for the ride home can help with your head and face. Make sure you stay to one side of the lane because the center part always has oil in it and becomes very slick. Now the keeping dry part in this situation isn’t going to happen unless you pull off and get rain gear and that’s not always an option. The good news is that once you’re in it for awhile you get so wet that it really doesn’t matter anymore. What does matter is that you get home safe. Getting off the highway and slowing down are two of the best suggestions I have for the unprepared rider.

While nobody likes getting caught in the rain when you are prepared it’s really not that bad. First of all if you ride a bagger the windshield will block a lot of that Chinese torture type of rain. Another thing great about the bikes with bags is that you can store products like rain gear and boot straps to keep that rain from ruining your ride. The idea is to keep from getting soaked so the more you are ready for the weather the better your ride will be. On any bike if you leave the house in a rain storm you tend to know what you are in for and that makes the situation different. A rider that doesn’t typically wear a helmet may change his mind for the comfort of the ride. In any case riding in the rain can be a safe if you use caution and keep your distance. You should always be aware of standing water because hydroplaning on a motorcycle is very different than in a car. Always use caution and you’ll be alright.
A bad day on the motorcycle is better than a good day at work so tough it out. Just remember no one wants to see your socks when you ride so get a set of Biker Boot Straps.
