FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Rio Rancho, New Mexico, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) March 11, 2011 --

Martial arts classes in Rio Rancho tend to come in two categories: traditional and sports-based. Traditional martial arts form a wider umbrella over styles such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Japanese Ju-jitsu, Kajukenbo, etc. They tend to encourage learning through pre-arranged forms or drills performed on pads. Sports-based martial arts include Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, wrestling, kickboxing, etc; and tend to focus more on dynamic drills and live sparring with resisting opponents. Styles such as Krav Maga and other exclusively self-defense based systems will be included under the "traditional" umbrella since they do not fall under the sport criteria of live sparring, particularly within a certain rule set.

When it comes to self-defense, both schools of thought have advantages and disadvantages. The traditional approach usually does a good job of scenario-based training, awareness training, de-escalation drills, etc. However, lack of sparring leads to the use of many ineffective techniques, as well as a common lack of physical conditioning necessary to employ the techniques in a violent altercation. The sports-based approach tends to be more effective for actual practical application of the physical techniques due to hours of time spent on the mat with fully resisting opponents. The downside is that a sparring mentality is not necessarily conducive to the sudden, violent psychological nature of an assault; and certain fighting range and weapon considerations are often not even considered.

What is needed is a gym that fills in the gap, and Crazy Monkey New Mexico Gym (505)385-0224 does just that. The system taught is the same taught to U.S. Army Special Forces 1st SFG(A), and keeps a few main points in mind:

1. The system is sports-based. Boxing, dirty boxing, kickboxing, clinch, takedown defense and ground survival are all covered within a live framework, progressively building to sparring against fully resisting partners.

2. The techniques are also taught in modified form for the street. Most sport-based techniques require minimal adjustment for effective self-defense.
3. A strong focus on the clinch range is covered. The clinch is a crucial range that is woefully neglected in many stand-up striking schools. However, mastery of the clinch range allows the striker to strike and the grappler to grapple, as the clinch range plays a key transitional role.
4. The largely ignored mental aspect of a violent encounter is covered, as well as world class sports psychology techniques for maintaining athletic excellence.

5. Edged weapon defense and situational awareness are covered in detail. The smallest, least important part of a violent encounter is the actual attack. Someone has often made several critical errors in awareness and judgement prior to being a victim.

Crazy Monkey New Mexico Gym's (www.crazymonkeynewmexico.com) focus is much larger than self-defense, but it does take practical application seriously within it's proper order of importance. Call (505) 385-0224 to learn more information.
