ROCKFORD SLEEP APNEA DENTIST: LEARN HOW COMFORTABLE ORAL APPLIANCES CAN TREAT SLEEP APNEA
Sleep apnea is a serious and dangerous condition that can lead to serious medical disorders including high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, worsening of diabetes and short term memory loss.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 3, 2010 --
It is now universally recognized that sleep apnea is a serious disorder with numerous adverse health consequences. The treatment for sleep apnea has historically been surgery to the soft palate and CPAP. Information about the dangers of sleep apnea can be found at: http://www.ihatecpap.com/sleep_apnea_dangers.html
Soft palate surgery has failed the majority of patients, was very painful and had an extremely high morbidity rate. The worst problem was after going thru the surgery most patients still required CPAP to treat their obstructive sleep apnea.
CPAP, or Continuous Positive Air Pressure is the standard medical treatment for sleep apnea. CPAP consists of a mask, hose and compressor that the patient wears while sleeping and is extremely efective. The problem is most patients also find it extremely annoying and 60% of patients according to a recent study abandon CPAP entirely. The patients who use CPAP average only 4-5 hours of wear 4-5 nights a week leaving them dangerously undertreated and still at risk.
The good news is that approximately25% of patients love CPAP from the first night and use it religeously all night, every night. But what about the rest of the CPAP users, they use it far less than the average.
Medicare has recognized how poor CPAP compliance is and has set minimum guidelines for payment. This will save Medicare millions but what about the untreated patient.
Dental Sleep Medicine is a relatively new medical field that offers comfortable oral appliances for patients who do not tolerate or want to use CPAP. Sleep Apnea Dentists are trained to fit patients with oral appliances and to work with sleep physicians to assure adequate treatment. In 2005 the AASM, American Acaemy of Sleep Medicine accepted CPAP as a first line treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea. The National Slep Foundation (NSF) declared that "Oral Appliances are a therapy whose time has come".
Studies have shown that the majority of patients prefer oral appliances over CPAP if offered a choice. Learn more about comfortable oral appliance therapy at http://www.ihatecpap.com.
