After a series of auctions held in Russia throughout February and March to award 4G licences in 40 regions, Rostelecom the incumbent long distance operator and subsidiary of state-owned conglomerate Svyazinvest, has emerged as the big winner of the tender by sweeping up to 38 regions. These concessions covering a third of the Russian population, will enable Rostelecom to build and launch 4G networks in the 2.3GHz-2.4GHz band within 18 months using Russian-made equipment in line with the licensing conditions.
In the same tender, that excluded key markets such as Moscow and St Petersburg-due to recent launch of 3G services in these areas by the big three mobile operators, Mobile TeleSystems, Vimpelcom and MegaFon- Sibirtelecom the other subsidiary of Svyazinvest and Vainakh Telecom have been awarded 4G spectrum as well, respectively covering the Tomsk and Chechnya areas.
