Saluting Cobb County African-American Trailblazers

A Black History Month Celebration featuring Special Musical Guest Bishop Paul S. Morton & The FGBCF Mass Choir.

(Free-Press-Release.com) January 25, 2012 -- GLOW Women’s Ministry of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Marietta, GA, presents “Setting the Standard,” an evening of ministry of the arts (song, dance and poetry). This unique Black History Month Celebration will be held 5:00 PM on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 566 Whitlock Avenue, Marietta, GA 30064 The event will recognize African-American trailblazers in Cobb County.

The 2012 Trailblazers are as follows:

Mrs. Eloise Morris Wright, 103, served as the first black manager for public housing in Marietta, working at both Lyman Homes and Fort Hill. She also organized the city’s first black Girl Scout troop and served as a charter member of the Cobb chapter of the NAACP. She also served as the Director of Music for Turner Chapel AME Church for over 42 years training more than 500 students.

Mrs. Deane Bonner has been president of the Cobb County branch of the NAACP since 1997. Under her leadership, the Cobb County NAACP has been an active political and academic force. Some of their accomplishments include under Mrs. Bonner’s leadership includes: the Annual Education Forum, daily voter registration, host political forums, collaboration with city and local school, police, and civic organizations.

Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan made history at age 23 by becoming the first African-American to serve in the Georgia House of Representatives for Cobb County. Elected to her fourth term in November 2008, winning over 72% of the vote, at age 31 Morgan remains the youngest female member of the Georgia General Assembly. A powerful political voice, inspirational speaker and trainer, Morgan serves on the Children and Youth, Education, Health and Human Services, and Governmental Affairs Committees.


Rev. Dr. Randolph Scott, Associate Minister, PGMBC, former Director of Christian Education, founder of PGMBC Black History and M.L. King Programs, PGMBC Church Historian, Social Activist, Professor of Sociology Chattahoochee Community College, history Professor, Kennesaw State University, Director of the National Baptist Association BTU-Kennesaw Association...and more, Dr. Scott has been a long time activist for civil rights in Cobb County.

Mr. David Hankerson supervises Cobb's 4,600 county employees. In 1993, he became Georgia's first African American county manager. He joined Cobb Government as manager of the Development Control Department. Previously he served as a district conservationist for the USDA Soil Conservation Service. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy from Fort Valley State College and a Juris Doctorate from Woodrow Wilson College of Law.

Rev. Anthony Coleman is a three-term Marietta city councilman representing the 5th Ward. A native of Marietta, Rev. Coleman has provided an example of active leadership for over a decade. His deep commitment to fostering growth in his community has been demonstrated through his leadership on the city’s Public Safety Committee (on which he serves as chairman), in addition to the Economic/Community Development and the Parks & Recreation and Tourism committees.
