FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 10, 2011 -- The evening air is crisp, tree leaves are turning a vibrant sienna, and pumpkin spice lattes have returned on the Starbucks menu; it must be Autumn. The time of year when sweaters emerge from their moth ball confines and travelers start thinking about romantic mountain getaways by the fireplace. San Diego’s nearby hotels are just the place. Here’s a few suggestions.

Kurt Cobain guards the fourth-floor elevator nook. No, not the ghost of the late Nirvana lead singer; rather, a black-and-white photo of Cobain, onstage, with those haunting eyes. On another wall by the elevator hang lyrics from an ancient Jackson Brown song. And 24/7, there’s piped-in rock music—I hear strains of Squeeze after check in, and Paul McCartney is crooning during departure. My retired parents would not enjoy a stay here. It’s loud. Even when there’s nobody around, you feel like a bustle is just waiting to break out. It took me a day to realize you have to pretend you’re a touring rock star—or are at least “in the band”—to find your groove as a guest at Hard Rock Hotel San Diego.

Ayres Lodge in Alpine

The only wildlife at Ayres Lodge is the deer head on the lobby wall and a few pooches accompanying their masters in the guestrooms. But, the warm, western lodge setting is extremely inviting. Just 30 minutes from downtown San Diego, the quaint 98 room inn sits in the small mountain town of Alpine. Antiques and one of a kind furnishings like the civil war riffle lamp seen in the above video, were found by Mrs. Ayres at yard sales. A complimentary full breakfast, plus a milk and cookie evening reception attribute to the homey feel. (Room rates start at $104 per night.)

Inn in Rancho Bernardo
The Spa at the Rancho Bernardo Inn (or RBI) offers a “Made Fresh Daily” program that’s a menu of seasonal body treatments developed by the spa staff working in conjunction with the property’s chefs. A mixture of watermelon, cucumber, three tablespoons of sugar and a nice dollop of aloe was rubbed on my hands. Then, a savory-smelling blend of a cup of ground coffee, brown sugar, almond oil and a tablespoon of vanilla extract was brewed on my back.
