The bike she presented was eye catching and its design was a bit out of the box. The goal of the Volagi bike is to provide the recreational rider who likes long rides the most comfortable bike on the market, but with the geometry is designed to handle quickly like a race bike. Volagi Liscio certainly has a “whoa” factor, with its Wishbone frame and Avid’s mechanical disc brakes.

Volagi’s unique split seat stays (Wishbone) allow for more flex in both the seat stays and it greatly softens the ride. That doesn’t mean that the bike is whippy, however. The beefy downtube and chainstays offer plenty of stiffness for power transfer. Those stays and the fork also allow plenty of width to allow the rider to run wider tires, up to 28c.

Disc brakes offer consistent braking under all conditions, better safety and control, better stopping power, less hand fatigue, less maintenance, they’re more economical, easy to adjust, won’t damage your expensive carbon rims, will brake even with broken wheels, you can run wider tires and/or fenders without worrying about caliper clearance and it makes changing a flat easier.

Current race bikes can give you the performance, but beat you up on rides lasting two to three hundred miles or more. The great thing about these bikes, beyond the claimed better braking and comfort, is that none of the parts are proprietary to make it work. When hydraulic disc brakes for road bikes come out, which is inevitable, you’ll be able to upgrade (though depending on how the internal cabling is run, you may have to run the house along the frame). That, and you can slap fenders on the frame using the built-in mounts and ride all winter long. Wide 25mm rims let you throw some ‘cross or winter commuter tires on.

Volagi, is founded by two former Specialized Bikes employees. Robert Choi was the founder of VistalLite and when Bell Sports purchased VistalLite, he became the head of marketing and product development for Blackburn, Rhode Gear and VistalLite. He then worked at CamelBak for 10 years developing many break-through products for CamelBak.

In July Volagi’s Demo Truck came to San Diego and El Camino Bike Shop for a week of demo riding. People were checking out and riding the Volagi for 6 days. At the end of the Demo week over 30 people had ridden the bike and 3 people had put in an order for the bike. As one happy new Volagi customer said “I trust the guys at El Camino Bike Shop. I was looking for something different and they showed me the Volagi Lisco. One test ride and I was sold.
