For a record 6th month in a row Asset Conversion Services has sold more Sun M4000 and M5000 64GB memory kites than any other reseller in the world. When asked how this is possible Steve Harshbarger went on to say “ We noticed back in August of 2011 that Sun was having a supply problem with their manufacturer for the 64GB memory SELX2D1P ( 8 x 8GB DIMMs 371-4476). In this economy you have to be quick to take advantage of any rare misstep you see. The manufacturer still had a couple of thousand modules that Sun did not scoop up and we just happened to be in the right place at the right time to take advantage of it.” Was there an element of luck involved? “Absolutely, but you have to be able to take advantage of luck when it comes your way. We also were able to find the Memory Board 541-0545 that the 8x8’s DIMMs install on to. If it was not for that last piece, we probably would not be selling as many Sun memory modules as we have. That coupled with the fact that Sun is only supplying 64GB memory to a select few companies has helped us tremendously. Also, they are no longer advertising the 64GB kit for the M4000 and M5000 Sun servers. So yes it is kind of the perfect storm and we have not seen this kind of memory business since 2000.”

We asked how they got the word out and were able to seal up the market for the SELX2D1P (8x8 DIMMs 371-4476) and the 541-0545 memory boards; Harshbarger said that “Once we felt we had pretty much cornered the market on the Sun M4000 and M5000 64gb memory kits we let the broker market know. About 90% of our business is through brokers, who sell to end users, we know a couple hundred brokers and it does not take long once they know they have a source. What surprised us was a good deal of the 64GB memory kits were going overseas. We would say at least half of the SELX2D1P were going overseas and the rest was for US consumption.

We delved a little more into the Sun memory 64GB phenomenon and asked Harshbarger ‘why take the chance, weren’t you afraid that Sun would just start to re-manufacture the memory kit with another manufacturer’? Harshbarger said “Of course we were taking a chance and it could have backfired on us, but what we were counting on is an existing pent up need that we had in fact un-covered during our research. We felt we had more encouragement when a few of the Sun/Oracle executives that we have known for over 20 years admitted that they were kind of dragging their feet on when to pull the trigger on another manufacturing run. For us the real luck was while Sun was contemplating another run of the SELX2D1P and the 541-0545 memory boards, we were taking orders and moving memory as fast as we could. It was a bit of a cat and mouse game, and lucky for us Sun/Oracle let us have a little cheese. You have to understand, that while this is big for a small company like Asset Conversion Services it is of little to no consequence to Sun/Oracle.
