OAKLAND, CA – The San Pablo Arts District Fund (SPAD) is proud to host Chapter Nine of the popular Easy Bay reading series Lip Service West, Friday, August 12, 2011, at 7 p.m., at 5512 San Pablo Avenue in North Oakland’s Golden Gate District. The featured readers for the evening will be W. Ross Ayers, Sean Craven, Pamela Holm, Kishma Patnaik, and Howard Zalkin. The event is free.

Since transporting itself from Miami to the Bay Area in 2010, Lip Service West has provided local writers, amateur and professional alike, the platform to share their true “gritty, real, and raw” stories.

LSW is made possible by the San Pablo Arts District Fund, which is dedicated to promoting the arts and facilitating urban development in the Golden Gate District. Area writer Joe Clifford produces the event.

“Lip Service West is the ultimate experience,” says Clifford. “We strive to shake literature out of its staid comfort zone.”

W. Ross Ayers writes edgy realistic-fiction novels. He pushes the edges of creation, packaging, publishing and marketing of literature. His Blood, Guns and – An All-American Tale of a Boy and His Dog is a coffee table novel about a boy growing up in a small farming community and on to present day in San Francisco.

Sean Craven’s paleontological art has been used by the University of Bristol, he’s smeared George W. Bush on the Warner Brothers website, his dialog has been broadcast on the BBC, his first pro fiction sale was to the previously-all-star Tor.com, and he is the brokest guy you ever met.

Pamela Holm is the author of the novel The Night Garden, a memoir titled The Toaster Broke, So We’re Getting Married, and the play Lovesick, the Cat Allergy Musical. Pamela is currently working on Broken English, a memoir about living in India. She likes sunshine, motorcycles and loud music.

Kishma Patnaik has used writing to explore the world around her since childhood. At the age of twenty-seven she traveled to India to research her grandfather's life, inspiring poetry, short stories, and memoir pieces. She lives in Berkeley in a rambling house with her black dog of eleven years, Zoe.

Howard Zalkin has worked as a professor, a farmhand, a technical writer, and a software sales engineer. Over the years, he has taught Russian, Linguistics, relational database design, and database administration, as well as traveled extensively. He is currently enrolled at UC Berkeley Extension in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Creative Writing.
