OAKLAND, CA – The San Pablo Arts District Fund (SPAD) is proud to host the second installment of Lip Service West: True Stories, Friday, August 13, 2010, at 8 p.m., at 5512 San Pablo Avenue in North Oakland’s Golden Gate District. This free event will feature readers Joe Clifford, John W. Evans, Allison Landa, Joe Loya, and Tom Pitts.

Originating in Los Angeles, made famous in Miami, and now in the Bay Area, Lip Service West provides writers, professional and amateur alike, a forum to share their work, unfiltered, uninterrupted, and unapologetic. The stories are all true and no subject is off limits.

LSW is made possible by the San Pablo Arts District Fund, which is dedicated to promoting the arts and facilitating economic development in the Golden Gate District by converting empty storefronts along the San Pablo corridor into functional galleries.

This unique event combines SPAD’s community development philosophy, free equitable access to the arts and open submissions, allowing people from all walks of life a space to tell their stories and experience artistry. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, Lip Service West promises to be unlike any literary event you’ve ever experienced.

Joe Clifford earned his MFA degree from Florida International University in 2008. His publications include Big Bridge, Bryant Literary Review, CT Review, and Thuglit, among others. He is represented by MDM Management, New York.

A former Stegner Fellow, John W. Evans is the Jones Lecturer in Poetry at Stanford University. He is the author of Zugzwang (RockSaw Press, 2009), and his poems appear in The Missouri Review, Boston Review, The Southern Review, Gettysburg Review, and elsewhere.

Allison Landa is a Berkeley-based writer whose work has been featured in Word Riot, Defenestration, and CherryBleeds, among others. A MacDowell Colony Fellow, she received her MFA from St. Mary’s College. Stalk her at www.allisonlanda.com

Joe Loya is an essayist, playwright, and the author of the critically acclaimed memoir, The Man Who Outgrew His Prison Cell: Confessions of a Bank Robber. He is founder of Own Your Story (www.ownyourstory.com), which promotes the transformational power of writing personal narrative.

Tom Pitts arrived in San Francisco during the great punk rock migration of the 1980’s. Signed by Rough Trade, Tom put out two celebrated albums with his band, Short Dogs Grow, before succumbing to the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle. After spending a decade on the dirty streets, Tom has come back clean, with stories to tell.
