Casting is an ancient technique that basically involves working with metal in its molten form. It is a redrawing craft of melting metals at high temperatures and using molds to then shape the metal into new items. Following are some different types of casting methods for different products.
Sand Casting, Centrifugal Casting Process
Sand casting process is a simple process used to make small to large parts including valve bodies, locomotive components and construction machineries. Sand Casting is produced by forming a mold followed by pouring molten liquid metal. Typically, sand casting process is used to produce parts out of common metals such as aluminum, bronze, and iron. On the other hand, in centrifugal casting process, mold is rotated about its axis, as the molten metal is poured. This type of casting is usually fine grained and atmospheric corrosion resistant. Centrifugal casting process is performed in wide variety of industries, including power transmission, aerospace, industrial and marine.
Stainless Steel Castings, High Cobalt Based Alloy Castings
Stainless steel casting is the multifarious process of shaping stainless steel into functional industrial products using a combination of heat and compressive force. Stainless steel castings are mainly categorized as rough cast or machine finished castings. In pre steel casting process, stainless steel undergoes tension test including tensile strength, yield strength and reduction of area. These customized stainless steel castings are used in aerospace industry, petroleum industries, power industries, oil refineries and many other sectors. High cobalt based alloy castings has outstanding stress rupture-life and is highly resistant to the erosion and corrosion. In addition, cobalt based casting is wear resistance, tear resistance and oxidation resistance. Industrial applications of customized cobalt based alloy castings include manufacturing of gas turbine components, medical implant devices, glass fiber production and other heat, wear and corrosion resistant parts.
Castings in Super Alloys, Duplex Alloys
Super Alloys are metallic materials specifically used where the temperature variation is quite high. They are stiff, highly durable, crack resistance and have acceptable density. For these reasons, castings in super alloys are primarily used in jet engines, space vehicles, nuclear reactors, submarines, power generation applications, chemical plants, and oil rigs.
