FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Rafael, California, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) May 2, 2011 -- “I am honored to have again earned the Bay-Friendly Qualified Landscaper status!” said Scott Sherman with AvidGreen.

With his recent Bay-Friendly Qualified Landscaper re-certification, and his background in agriculture, viticulture, and construction, Sherman commented that he has cutting edge knowledge and skills. He is able to demonstrate to the community, and provide to his clients, the capability to make landscapes and gardens more sustainable using best practices in order to grow a more sustainable Bay Area.

Scott said, “The primary goal of Bay-Friendly is to encourage behavior changes that lessen the impact of conventional landscape practices on the local environment by providing home gardeners, landscape professionals, and local governments with the necessary skills to create beautiful, healthy, and sustainable gardens and landscapes.”

The Bay-Friendly Community covers the broad categories of environmental protection and quality, waste and water management, air and water quality, landscape industry, and the home gardening community.

Sherman is both an advocate and practitioner of the 7 principles of Bay-Friendly Landscaping and Gardening. These include: landscape locally as part of the larger San Francisco Bay ecosystem and watershed; landscape for less waste to the landfill; nurture the soil food web to thrive so it can filter pollution, store water, provide plant nutrients, and help plants resist pests naturally; conserve water with efficient irrigation systems that include self adjusting weather based controllers; conserve energy by shading buildings and paved areas and using efficient outdoor lighting; protect water and air quality by maximizing permeable surfaces and using integrated pest management; and finally create wildlife habitat crucial to the health of natural ecosystems by using native plants that can provide food, water, and shelter for birds, butterflies, insects, and other creatures.

In addition, Sherman invites all those who are interested in Bay-Friendly sustainable gardens and landscapes to visit the AvidGreen Bay-Friendly Garden during the upcoming 5th Annual Eco-Friendly Garden Tour in Marin County. He will provide examples of what eco-friendly looks like and will be available at his home, which is on the tour, to answer questions and provide suggestions.

Highlights of this tour and other landscaping design, vineyards, and backyard farm projects of Scott, can be found by reading updates that will be posted at the AvidGreen website and blog over the next few weeks.

Sherman, a graduate of UC Davis with a masters degree in Horticulture and Viticulture with experience as a manager of instructional design for Citicorp & IBM … is on a mission to empower guerrilla living by starting urban farms to be sustainable in the city and surrounding area of the Asia Pacific region.
