When weavers thought of having a different pattern for various families, such that each family wears his own tartan the concept of family tartan evolved.
This was more popularized by Sir Walter Scott, which encouraged each family to make the traditional family tartan. The child remains in the father’s clan if the child has taken the father’s surname and otherwise if he takes the mother’s surname, he belongs to the mother’s clan. The child gets the clan tartans on the basis of which clan the child belongs to. The Scottish tartan had become apparel till the end of 19th century owned by both the highland and the lowland Scottish people.
The various forms which have been found to be most popular designs that are taken up for the design patterns are the Black Watch, Caledonia, and MacDonald. To have a variety of tartans for one clan until recently it was not a custom, but not the trend is to have different tartans for different purposes.
Worn below the waist by the men tartan trews are a form of the tartan trousers . To prevent the wearing out of the apparel the tartan trews are lined inside by leather. More popularly known as kilt the tartan trousers and tartan trews were found as a substitute to the tartan skirts. As a piece for clothing the tartan trousers are a garment which can ideally serve multiple purposes. It can be worn on formal occasions and can also be worn for hunting outings.
