SDUIS Students Create Websites as Hospitality & Tourism Marketing Project--Providing Real World Practical Experience for International Enrollees

(Free-Press-Release.com) January 17, 2012 -- San Diego, CA – San Diego University for Integrative Studies (SDUIS) students in Hospitality & Tourism Marketing have created hospitality websites as a hands on promotion for their projects in hotels, lodging, and restaurants.
“International students attending SDUIS have to absorb a lot of theory pertaining to their subject or discipline of study,” says Ken Joys, SDUIS lecturer. “In this case the students put those studies to practical use, developing websites that incorporate the chief elements that are necessary to market a hospitality property.”

The class, with more than twenty students was broken down into four separate teams. Each team identified the kind of hospitality property they were interest in. One hotel resort was selected. The other three were restaurants, two Thai, and one Brazilian. The hotel, Star Bay Resort was located in San Diego. One Thai restaurant, D’O Siam Cottage was located in the city’s Old Town section, and the second Thai restaurant, Siam Fusion, was located near the beach in La Jolla. The third restaurant, Thrill of Brazil, was located in the European country of Austria.
Each team laid out the essential elements of their property. The restaurants included menus, bar and beverage offerings, desserts, entrées and daily and weekly specials, and chef profiles. The resort hotel included important room descriptions, studios, one¬¬ or two bedrooms, on site amenities such as day spa, three restaurants and a bar, and other features like child day care.

All of the websites are customer friendly, including reviews, contact page and Google Maps information and directions. Special promotions like Thrill of Brazil’s ski tie in, show your lift pass and get a free Caipirinha cocktail; and the Siam Fusion Coupon Discounts for 10% and $5 Off, illustrate basic marketing tenets designed to promote customer traffic and loyalty.
“For a well-rounded marketing approach, each website includes links to Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, and iPhone app,” Joys continues. “The effort was to incorporate the main elements of social networking, an ever expanding part of marketing in hospitality, tourism, and any other business in this day and age.”

Besides their academic training, the students can cite these self-created websites as practical work products that fully demonstrate their hospitality-tourism understanding and marketing skills. It is a valuable asset that can be applied no matter where the students’ future careers take them.
