What's the difference between oral sedation (taking a pill) versus general anesthesia? When you take a pill it is broken down by your digestive system. Because each individual's digestive processes are different, it is hard to calculate the effects of an amount of drug. You can only guess or estimate how much to take. However, with general anesthesia, the drugs are titrated, or measured, to your specific body's conditions. Factors such as height, weight, and medical conditions are part of the calculation. With general anesthesia an Anesthesiologist gives a specific combination of drugs through a line directly to your blood, via IV. The Anesthesiologist monitors your vital signs, including your blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen level. During that time your body is very unresponsive and in deep sleep. However, with a pill, you can still be stirred and are not as closely monitored. If you still have questions about this process or the differences, be sure to contact Dr. Steven DeLisle.
