FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK, NY, NOVEMBER 1, 2011 - Elizabeth Olsen, designer and founder of vegan footwear line Olsenhaus is today’s modern Renaissance woman: business owner, creative director, designer and activist. Not only does Olsen commit her company to sustainable practices and utilizing vegan materials, but also she is also involved with many animal rights organizations such as Farm Sanctuary, The Humane Society and PETA.
A vegetarian for 20 years and a vegan for the past 4, Olsen first began her foray into animal and environmental activism in high school, where she co-founded an animal rights club after reading about the cruel and unethical practices of the dairy and meat industries. Graduating from FIT with a degree in Accessories Design, Olsen went on to work for companies like Nike, Calvin Klein and Nine West, eventually becoming the Creative Director for Tommy Hilfiger Handbags.
Combining her two passions together, Olsen officially launched Olsenhaus in 2008 to become a voice for animals and the environment, showing that buyers and consumers didn’t need to sacrifice style and luxury to lead a conscious lifestyle. An inspiration to budding designers, Olsen takes advantage of opportunities to challenge up-and-coming design students to think about and incorporate eco-friendly practices into their endeavors. She has been featured on the Bravo! Network’s The Fashion Show, CBS's The Price is Right, as well as NBC and E!. Olsen is also in talks with several networks regarding a documentary of her pioneering work.
Recently, Olsen sponsored a competition for Pratt Institute students, promoting awareness and benefiting Farm Sanctuary. She challenged them to combine modern, appealing design with environmentally friendly materials. Attendees at the launch event included media mogul Russell Simmons, Moby, Jane Valez-Mitchell (CNN), Princess Superstar and Farm Sanctuary president Gene Baur. The winning design will be produced and sold under the Olsenhaus brand, with portions of the proceeds going to benefit Farm Sanctuary.
In the constantly changing industry of fashion, Elizabeth Olsen and Olsenhaus are setting a new standard for compassionate luxury.
