Back Pain is a common condition, affecting most people at some point during their life. Most cases are associated with pain and stiffness in the lower back.
Back pain is generally classified in two ways:
• Specific back pain – associated with underlying health condition or damage to the spine
• Non-specific back pain – associated with minor injuries such as muscle strains or a pinched nerve
What are the Symptoms of Back Pain?
• Pain across lower back that can radiate to the buttocks or back of the thigh
• Reduced range of movement, especially bending forward or leaning back
• Muscle spasms
• Change in posture
Although most cases are mild and resolve without needing to consult medical advice, there are a number of ‘danger’ signs that suggest the back pain is being caused by a more serious condition.
Seek medical advice if:
• High temperature (>38ºC)
• Unexplained weight loss
• Inflammation or swelling of the back
• Pain that moves to your chest
• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• Inability to pass urine
• Numbness around genitals or buttocks
• You have a weakened immune system e.g. due to HIV/AIDS
• You misuse drugs
• You have/had had cancer
What Causes Back Pain?
Diagnosing the exact cause of the pain is often difficult, but most cases of lower back pain are due to minor injuries such as muscle strains or pinched nerves. It can be triggered by daily activities such as lifting an object badly, slouching, over-stretching or even driving for long periods without taking a break.
Some risk factors for developing back pain include:
• Being overweight – the extra weight increases pressure on the spine
• Pregnancy – excess weight puts additional strain on the back
• Smoking
• Long-term use of certain medications such as corticosteroids which weaken bones
• Stress
How is Back Pain Treated?
Most cases of back pain can be treated with a combination of medication and self-care methods. Analgesics (painkillers) such as paracetamol and ibuprofen are commonly used to relieve the pain. For more severe cases, stronger opiates such as morphine are prescribed, but this is a very rare occurrence.
Individuals experiencing muscle spasms may also be prescribed a short course of a muscle relaxant, such as diazepam. Long term use of muscle relaxants such as diazepam is not recommended as they are highly addictive.
For patients with chronic back pain, other measures such as acupuncture, back massages, and exercise therapy are also recommended.
