USABookNews.com, the premier online magazine and review website for mainstream and independent publishing houses, announced the winners and finalists of THE USA “BEST BOOKS 2011” AWARDS on November 1, 2011. Jeffrey Keen, President and CEO of USA Book News, said this year’s contest yielded an unprecedented number of entries, which were then narrowed down to over 500 winners and finalists.
Winners and finalists traversed the publishing landscape: Simon & Schuster, St. Martin’s Press, Random House, Penguin, Harper Collins, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, McGraw-Hill, John Wiley & Sons and hundreds of independent houses contributed to this year’s outstanding competition.
Alexandra Faer Bryan, R. N., wrote Green Kitty as an aid for parents or grandparents to help explain dementia and Alzheimer's memory loss issues to children. It is aimed at the age group of 8-12 year olds and few books target that age group about this illness. The work is one of six finalists for "Best Books 2011" in children's fiction by USA Book News. The book was written to be educational but the author is thrilled that it is being recognized as entertaining fiction. The book is about a grandmother recently placed in assisted living and her visiting grandchild. It subtly weaves caregiving suggestions into the storyline and includes hilarious true animal stories.
"What I liked best about the “Green Kitty” is that it shows how, despite the illness of Alzheimer’s disease, a strong bond can continue within the family. The book fosters respect and dignity for an elder, highlighting elder value irrespective of Alzheimer's disease and Dementia related losses. That, in itself, makes the book a good buy."
