Yakima, Washington - U.S. Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell of Washington State recently sent a letter to President Obama urging that USDA resolve discrimination against Hispanic farmers.
In the letter the Senators write, “we will never be able to close the entire book of discrimination within the USDA until…the USDA is reformed.”
The Senators reminded the President in their letter that thousands of Hispanic farmers and ranchers continue to suffer discrimination and urged him to work with them to resolve their concerns.
The Senators go on to say "…we urge you to work to ensure Hispanic farmers and ranchers…can begin to rebuild their lives and businesses. Fundamental fairness requires nothing less, and inconsistent applications of justice only serve to threaten the foundations of this great nation. The sooner we can resolve this issue once and for all, the sooner we can look forward to an agency that serves all Americans equally."
The letter was also signed by Senators Bennet, D-CO; Tom Udall, D-NM; Robert Menendez, D-NJ; Barbara Boxer, D-CA; and Arlen Specter, D-PA.
“I urge President Obama and the USDA to do everything they can to ensure that farmers who were discriminated against are made whole and given a chance to rebuild their businesses and their lives," said Senator Tom Udall.
