Los Angeles, CA - January 6, 2012 - T.G.C. Films, LLC - Today’s college graduates have entered a world much different than the world their parents faced upon their own graduation. The previous guarantee that you would be rewarded for your hard work is no longer in place; instead your biggest guarantee is to be a participating number in the nationwide student loan debt average of $25,000 and the disheartening current unemployment rate for those aged 20-24. An example of this is shown in the web series “Partners in Pretension” at www.partnersinpretension.com.
Following the story of Angel Valenzuela and Dorian Blue, two out-of-work and out-of-touch college graduates who turn to the internet to make their living, Partners in Pretension is a humorous look at how society has failed some of the people most dedicated to upholding its norms. After graduating college, the boys are shocked to be faced with unemployment, graduate school rejection, eviction, and mounting debt. As normal life offers them no answers, they turn to the online world with the scheme of earning money off the ad revenue of their pretentious how-to videos.
Co-creator Claire Wasmund states some of the inspiration came from her own outdated expectations and those of her friends, “You’re told early on that if you do well in school, pursue your passions, and follow society’s normal roadmap the world is going to pat you on the back, say ‘thanks for being here’, and reward you. That’s not so, more likely it’s going to say, ‘You want something, too?’”
With nearly 100,000 views on Koldcast TV, and also appearing on Mingle Media TV, VBCtv, and Man Of The Hour Magazine, the series currently has seven episodes consisting of four “story” episodes and three “how-to” episodes. The series not only highlights the current plight of disillusioned college-educated 20-somethings, it also explores the often elusive dream of earning a living through online video.
After doing the math on the world population and the average ad revenue earned from online videos, Angel and Dorian see no reason why they shouldn’t be instantly wealthy after posting their first enlightening how-to video. “When the real world offers you little help, it’s not uncommon to think that the virtual world is going to provide you with some sort of Deus ex machina-like salvation; that’s what Angel and Dorian feel they deserve,” says writer Claire Wasmund, “ultimately though, you hope they realize they’re certainly not faultless for their current situation.”
Co-creator Fernando Noor adds, “The appeal of this series is that many of us can watch and see our own naïve expectations for how we think life should go and laugh at them. Laugh and learn.”
