Sharing the Sweets with NY's Homeless

March 6, 2010

Local NYU students start a charity program that delivers the end-of-day food surplus at bakeries to local soup kitchens.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 6, 2010 -- In an effort to bring some cheer to New York City's less fortunate, a group of NYU students created a program for bringing sweets to local soup kitchens.

The program is called Compassionate Confections and is operated by Total Synapse, Inc., the company started by the NYU students behind the program. Their COO and founding partner, Abhinav Rohatgi, came up with the initial idea. It's been Rohatgi's pet project ever since he realized his favorite Dunkin' Donuts was wastefully discarding perfectly good food at the end of the day.

"So much food goes to waste here in the city," says Rohatgi. "Businesses have to throw out their unsold food at the end of the day. We want that food to go to people who'd appreciate it."

Compassionate Confections is the program with that task of making that happen. Rohatgi and his company have formed partnerships with local bakeries, including his local Dunkin' Donuts branch. Using volunteers (most of which are NYU students and involved with Total Synapse), the food is picked up and carried to a nearby soup kitchen where it's distributed to the hungry gathered there.

"Unfortunately, we don't have the manpower yet to do this daily," Rohatgi admits. "Our goal is to grow, though." The company continues to be in talks with other local bakeries in order to get more participants in the program. While increasing the number of suppliers, they are focusing also on increasing the number of volunteers.

"Getting involved feels good," says NYU junior Trey McLeskey, "and in college is really the place to do it. Most students are more than willing to volunteer their time for a good cause."

More information about Compassionate Confection is available on the Total Synapse website at http://www.totalsynapse.com/cc along with a contact form for questions about the program and participation.
