FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 25, 2011 --Consumer charity Which?, in conjunction with energy consultant AEA, conducted the study of renewable growth since the launch of the Feed-In Tariff in 2010, and found very distinct hotspots around the country. Sheffield topped the list having increased its renewable energy capacity by 3.5kW for every 1000 people , while London came in at sixth on the list, despite having added the most renewable technology, because of its high population.
The top ten league table of the greatest number of installations is:
1. Sheffield
2. Leeds
3. Bristol
4. Bradford
5. Birmingham
6. London
7. Liverpool
8. Edinburgh
9. Manchester
10. Glasgow
In almost all hotspots, the significant majority of the installations were of solar panels, although they accounted for 75% of Feed-In Tariff (FIT) payments. Wind power accounted for only 14%. To date 38,300 small domestic system – most of them homeowners - have registered.
The Feed In Tariff scheme designed to pay owners of renewable energy systems up to 5mW for each unit of energy they produce.
A spokesperson for solar energy company Solar Panels Direct, said: “Solar panel installations have really taken off since the Feed In Tariff scheme was introduced. It’s possible to make up to £28,000 from a 4kW solar PV system during the lifetime that the homeowner is registered with the Feed In Tariff scheme. That’s extremely attractive proposition for anyone and is the icing on the cake for anyone wanting to decrease their carbon footprint.”
The AEA study showed cornwall generates the most solar PV energy due to over 1000 installations pumping out a total of 3mW of power.
“Many people think incorrectly that there’s no point having solar panels in the UK because we don’t get enough sun, but actually the latest models of solar panels are advanced enough that they can generate a lot of power with normal levels of daylight, even in the winter or under cloudy conditions. You don’t have to live in the Mediterranean to have solar panels that can generate the maximum amount of power. The majority of homes in the UK can have solar panels fitted regardless of where they are as long as part of their roof has a south-facing aspect."
“In fact, if every home that was suitable had them fitted, they would generate enough power every year to boil 2.5 billion kettles for an hour.”
