SING FOR YOUR CITY
ENGLAND'S BIGGEST INTER-CITY KARAOKE COMPETITION IN AID OF CANCER RESEARCH UK
Laura Bocking, 19, from High Wycombe, and Owen Stevens, 21, from Radlett, will be raising money for Cancer Research UK, in September, by doing a sponsored inter-city Karaoke Competition around the country.
They will be visiting all 50 cities in England over 13 days, between 15th and 27th September, singing a well-known karaoke classic, voted for by the public, together with the public.
The event will be recorded and made into a film at the end of the trip, and will be published on YouTube and the Sing For Your City website, with the highlights of each cities performance merged together. The biggest city turnout will be named ‘Karaoke King of England’.
In February 2008, both Laura’s mother and Owen's grandmother died of cancer, and as a result, they decided they wanted to do something big for charity. They chose Cancer Research UK, to help aid research of this slow and painful disease, which affects not only the victim, but friends and family around them too.
Laura and Owen intend to promote a sense of community and diversity in their fundraiser, by encouraging everyone to participate and all sing together. Their target is £1,000 but they are hoping to beat it, with the help of sponsorship around the country.
The fundraiser launched on August 1st, inviting anyone in the country to vote for the song that they will be singing with everyone. A short film can also be found, giving details about the trip.
They will be encouraging people who do not wish to participate in the singing, to follow them via their online written and video blog, which can be found on their website, and on other sites such as Twitter and Flickr. They felt it was important to help people feel involved if they cannot make it to a city.
Owen said: “I want to raise money for Cancer Research because it is a worthy cause which has affected myself and good friends of mine in some way, as I'm sure as it has affected everyone at some point in their lives.
“This idea allows us to not only raise money for charity, but encourage people from all walks of life to join together and have fun as well. We want as many people to come to their city as possible, to represent themselves and support the charity.”
Laura said: “Losing a parent to cancer is one of the hardest things anyone could have to experience. To see a person, who has brought you up from birth, diminish both physically and mentally before your eyes is unimaginable.
“I would never wish it on anyone, and so I am trying my hardest to raise as much money as possible to improve the research.
“Also, nowadays there are an increasing number of reports of murders, beatings and acts of crime. We want to use this event to tell people to put all that aside, and come together as a city, as one.
“It will be people coming together to be pitted against each other in a karaoke competition for charity, not pitted against each other in a turf war.”
