I admit, looking back at the predictions I made about the show in September, I had a lot to learn. I didn't know that all the fuss about Gaius and Lucius trying to get Julia pregnant was just to produce an heir to bargain with Caesar for the Roman millions. I didn't even understand that Julia and Gaius were brother and sister, close in age, with Julia the Younger born several years later, followed by Julia the Elder giving birth to Lucius, then her five kids with Mark Antony/Herod.
I'd rather not have ever learned the gory intimate details of the Caesar Family, but now that I know it all a bit better, here's a more accurate translation of the events described in today's TV Guide interview with the actor who plays Wayne Rigsby:
Fans of The Mentalist love Wayne Rigsby, the towering, [GAIUS IS ALWAYS TALL]
emotionally dyslexic [AND GAIUS IS ALWAYS LESS CLEVER AND CUNNING AND CONTROLLED THAN LUCIUS] detective played by Owain Yeoman. But as the hit CBS crime show nears the end of its third season, there's still very little known about the guy. We're about to find out why. In tonight's episode, "Like a Redheaded Stepchild," we meet Rigsby's dad — played by the great William Forsythe [GREAT? FOR PLAYING CAESARS?]
— a crass [THE WORD CRASS COMES FROM CAESAR'S FATHER, CRASSUS],
abusive scum of an ex-con [CAESAR COMMITTED HUGE CRIMES, MASS MURDERS, CHILD ABUSE]
who may be connected to the murder of a prison guard. [GAIUS WAS THE GUARD GUARDING JULIA IN THE TOWER AT GLASTONBURY]
Bad Dad's rap sheet includes convictions for manslaughter and assault. [TONED DOWN VERSION OF CAESAR]
"It's a real eye-opener," Yeoman tells TV Guide Magazine. "You suddenly understand why Rigsby grew up and became a cop. He came from a really messed-up home life, [LIKE CAESAR'S CONS, INCEST AND HOME SURGERY?]
the kind that can easily send a kid down the wrong path. Instead, he took a stand against his father and decided to do something good with his life, all the while keeping his past pretty much a secret. [GAIUS BEGAN TO LIKE THE BRIT'S HE WAS CONNING AS KING CASSIVELAUNUS, SO HE REFUSED TO FORCE THEM TO PAY TAXES AND BOW DOWN TO CAESAR, AND WAS FINALLY GOING TO CONFESS TO THEM THAT HE WAS A ROMAN AND ASK TO STAY WITH THEM AND FIGHT AGAINST CAESAR]
Now comes a chance for Rigsby to finally face the truth and admit, 'This is where I come from.' I feel very lucky to have this episode." [BUT WHEN GAIUS TELLS HIS SISTER JULIA THAT HE'S GOING TO BE HONEST WITH THE BRITS, SHE PLOTS TO KILL HIM...]
Rigsby is forced to grill his father about the murder case and their reunion eventually turns violent. [WHEN GAIUS WENT TO TALK TO CAESAR, WHO THOUGHT GAIUS HAD GOTTEN JULIA PREGNANT INSTEAD OF GUARDING HER AGAINST A PREGNANCY, CAESAR HAD ALREADY BEEN TOLD BY JULIA THE YOUNGER THAT GAIUS WAS COMING TO ATTACK HIM AND PLANNED TO CONFESS TO THE BRITS, SO CAESAR'S GUARDS ATTACKED GAIUS, AND CAESAR STABBED HIM IN THE SHOULDER WITH A GOLDEN SWORD, WHICH GOT STUCK IN HIS LEATHER SHIELD - HE DIED A WEEK LATER, THE SWORD BURIED IN LONDON ]
"It's a wonderful epiphany, a real series-defining moment for my character," says Yeoman. "Rigsby comes away from it having grown a pair of balls." [YES GAIUS STOOD UP TO HIS FATHER, AND I'M EVEN A LITTLE SUSPICIOUS THAT HE WAS DYING FOR A WEEK, BUT ACTUALLY SURVIVED, TO COME BACK AND HELP LATER WITH CAESAR'S ASSASSINATION, THE THIRD CAESAR TO RISE FROM THE DEAD]
And he's ready to tell his ex-love Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) — who's about to wed an FBI agent — that he still has a thing for her. [CHRISTIAN GRACE, AS MARY MAGDALENE, DOES NOT LEAVE LUCIUS, HER YOUNGER BLONDER SON AND NEW LOVER, TO GO BACK WITH HONEST GAIUS - SHE PLOTS AND CONTRIBUTES TO HIS DEATH!]
"For three seasons we've watched Rigsby be a bit of a lapdog," Yeoman says. [BECAUSE GAIUS WAS TALLER THAN A TYPICAL CAESAR, AND LESS CONNIVING, HE'S SEEN AS HAVING MORE NATIVE EUROPEAN OR NORDIC GENES IN HIM, FROM THE WODE RACE OF BLOND GIANTS, PORTRAYED WITH A WOLF SYMBOL, BUT ONCE CONQUERED, AS A TAME AND OBEDIENT AND SMALLER DOG.]
"It's part of his bumbling charm [GAIUS IS ALWAYS SHOWN AS DUMBER THAN CLEVER LUCIUS, DESPITE HIS ROYAL EDUCATION, AND GULLIBLE ABOUT CONS]
but, where love is concerned, it's also been his downfall. [GAIUS LET HIMSELF BE KILLED BY HIS SISTER JULIA, WHEREAS LUCIUS MANIPULATED HER RIGHT BACK, LIKE CRAIG KEEPS THE UPPER HANDOVER GRACE]
The confrontation with his dad forces him to take perspective and tell Van Pelt what's in his heart. [THIS IS SUPPOSED TO GET FANS ROOTING FOR A RETURN TO THEIR INCESTUOUS BROTHER-SISTER ROMANCE, WITH THE OTHER CHOICE TO ROOT FOR THE MOTHER-SON ROMANCE OF JULIA AND LUCIUS, AS ACTED OUT BY GRACE AND CRAIG]
It's time for Rigsby to say, 'I have to look after me now.'"
Out of the mouths of babes, as they say. Let me tell you, history does not point to Rigsby/Gaius coming out of this ordeal alive. For the sake of the show's continuity, however, they might keep him around as the Holy Ghost.
