When St. James was twelve and Bradner was six-and-a-half, it appeared they were going to have the bleakest Christmas ever. No gifts. Their parents had returned from a disastrous attempt to relocate from Chicago to Miami, Florida. Now, flat broke, they tearfully told their daughters to take down their stockings…Santa wouldn’t be visiting that year.

Kids have faith, and the stockings remained in place. In the morning, they were filled with little gift-wrapped items like a pad of paper, a pencil, a few pieces of foil wrapped chocolate. The sisters say that through all of their years, those little gifts were the most precious…never forgotten.

With finances tight all over the world, St. James says, “Even if the gift is tiny, it shows love and caring. It can be as simple as a hand-written note. The economy is suffering, but don’t forget that kids have faith and it’s not hard to keep it alive.”
Her sister Phyllice added, “I was just a little kid, and I’ve received some pretty special gifts since that Christmas so long ago, but none that ever meant as much as what our parents did for us that night.”

As authors, both sisters say to remember that books make wonderful, affordable gifts.

The same principle applies to gift exchanges. Last week at the Sisters in Crime/Southern Nevada chapter Christmas party, partygoers exchanged gently used favorite books. They shared something they loved without breaking the budget.
