Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom – Soap making is a hobby rich in history, and may be well on its way to making history again.(http://www.supersoapmakingsecrets.com)
During the summer, ads and fliers for summer programs or classes fill community bulletin boards and shops willing to display them. One popular class is soap making, and it seems as if more and more people are getting into the hobby. An interview with a home soap maker reveals that not all people are learning this craft for recreational purposes.
Sandy Simmons, author of The Super Soap Making Book, an online book that teaches beginners how to make their own soap says “People are still feeling the effects of the recession, especially those that lost a lot. Making soap at home is one way that they can save money or make money.”
She could be right. Making soap at home does save money in the long run, and it also allows people to create actual bars again. Not too long ago, soap manufacturers admitted that soap with a curved design does give a customer less product than bar soap. Most products only have the curved design these days, meaning people have been paying more for less. With penny watchers practicing methods on how to make things like soap last longer, perhaps making their own was simply the next step.
More than just saving money, home soap makers can turn their pastime into a business. Homemade soaps are often more expensive that commercial soap, and it can present business opportunities for some. “Some people may definitely want to start their own soap business to try and make money,” says Simmons “but I think more people will do it to save money.”
Make money, save money, there's still an bonus. It's good for the environment. By allowing people to control what goes into their bars, the chances of synthetic materials being used is much less. In the past, synthetic materials in soap have been able to accumulate in waterways and put natural resources at risk. Homemade soap eliminates that risk. And with environmentalism becoming another popular craze, soap making fits right in.
“If more and more people begin making their own soap, this could affect the larger industries and the economy.” says Simmons “At present, the threat of the homemade soap maker is not yet being felt. However, given the current situation around the globe and what people have learned from this recession, it may be a matter of time.”
