Sony Releasing PS3 Update 3.10 This Week

Sony will be releasing their 3.10 update in just a few days, barely a week after word of its existence first leaked on the Internet. Sony has apparently been planning this for a while now, but network operation director Eric Lempel wouldn't say how long.

"I'll just say that it's been in the works for quite some time," he said.

"It's never been easy to just integrate new content into the PlayStation Network. We've had this planned for a while now."

Facebook integration is the update's centerpiece, enabling the PS3 to share Trophy updates and other information with the service's news feed. Of particular interest is the game-specific event updates, which Lempel says is the result of developers asking how they can start "feeding out information" about their games.

It shouldn't be long before the event updates start becoming available in PS3 games. The tools have already been sent out to Sony's first-party developers, Lempel said.

In the meantime, Lempel said that the new update is only "phase one" of Sony's plan for social networking on the PlayStation 3. They aim to create what Lempel called a "communication feedback loop," using the example of a PS3 posting word of a Trophy being unlocked, with users being able to comment and offer their congratulations. He also said that Sony is looking into opportunities with other social network sites, such as Raptr.

Aside from the Facebook integration, the update will also revamp the PS3's photo organization and smooth out the presentation of the friends list. Look for it later this week, along with our impressions.
