Months of solid preparation for the ‘Hailsham in Bloom’ campaign will come to fruition when the competition judges come to town and inspect this year’s endeavours.

Official judges for this prestigious award will meet at 10.30am at the Hailsham Country Park, where they'll be shown the newly restored wild flower meadow and recent Wentworth Pond improvements.

Later in the day, the judges will convene at the Hailsham Pavilion for an official presentation by the town council’s South & South East in Bloom Committee chairman, Cllr Jeff Bentley-Astor, and meet various representatives of local authorities, community groups and businesses.

From there, the judges go on to the main tour of the town visiting a number of sites where projects have been undertaken in the past year, including the High Street (floral displays), Hailsham East Community Centre (recycling murals), St Marys Avenue (newly planted trees) and the Cuckoo Trail. Visits will also be made to the winners of the Best Front Garden, Best Public House Display and Hailsham Heritage Award competitions.

Cllr Jeff Bentley-Astor said organisers were looking forward to showing off all that Hailsham has to offer:

“The Hailsham in Bloom Committee has arranged a packed schedule for the judges’ five hour stay. I sincerely hope the judges will be amazed by the high standard of this year’s various landscaping projects, floral displays and local environmental awareness initiatives.”

He added: “There has been a considerable amount of interest in the Hailsham in Bloom project from the community this past year and I think we've put together a strong entry. I'd like to thank each and everyone who has been involved in and supported the bid.”

The Committee’s Vice-Chairman, Cllr John Puttick, said: “An enormous amount of time and effort has gone into making this year’s Hailsham in Bloom one of the best ever.”

“Aesthetic improvements aside, all projects undertaken this year have also brought together residents, businesses and local community groups, and encouraged them to think about their local environment. For this reason, we already consider Hailsham in Bloom 2009 to have been a resounding success.”

Hailsham is up against East Grinstead, Littlehampton and Sittingbourne in the large town category of the South & South East in Bloom competition. The winner will be announced at a ceremony to be held at the Grand Hotel in Brighton on Wednesday 2nd September.
