Speed Awareness: How Fast Are You Going?

Mackay motorists will be informed of their speed by mobile Speed Awareness Monitors, thanks to a $10,000 community grant from Suncorp Insurance and the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

(Free-Press-Release.com) January 24, 2012 --Mackay motorists will be informed of their speed by mobile Speed Awareness Monitors, thanks to a $10,000 community grant from Suncorp Insurance and the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

The grant is one of 23 awarded to community groups throughout Queensland for initiatives that promote road safety and reduce crime or the fear of crime.

Portable Speed Awareness Monitors and Variable Message Signs will alert drivers of their speed or remind them of the speed limit in various areas.

The Mackay Regional Council has introduced the Speed Awareness Program to combat speeding in school zones, local streets, constructions zones and frequent accident areas. During 2010, there were 55 road crash fatalities involving speeding drivers or riders, accounting for more than 22% of Queensland’s road toll.

Suncorp Executive Manager, Martin Weatherhead, said: “Speed is a major contributor to traffic crashes so it is important for people to slow down and obey speed limits.”

Mackay District Traffic Branch Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Richard Turner said drivers speeding in suburban streets was a concern often raised by the community.

“We hope this program will raise awareness of speed limits and reduce the temptation for drivers to speed,” Senior Sergeant Tuner said.

The Community Grants Scheme (Road Safety and Crime Prevention) made possible by Suncorp Insurance and QPS is designed to enable local communities to develop and implement projects that will improve road safety or help reduce crime and fear of crime in Queensland.
