Dr. Naseer Homoud, Goodwill Ambassador and Director of Middle East office for the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council while expressing his distress over alarming increase in world hunger said “In just a few years, prices for staple foods needed to feed billions of people around the world rose to record levels, with prices for wheat, corn and rice increasing more than 80%. The steady increase in prices culminated in food riots and other disturbances in several countries, threatening to destabilize poor regions, push millions more below the poverty line, and reverse years of ground gained in the fight against global poverty”.
While stressing on the fundamental of establishing several corpuses for securing food supply to the masses that are hunger ridden Dr. Homoud urged the developed nations to implement the commitment which was resolved in G8 summit without any further delay. He hoped that if the agreed $10 billion for short- and long-term efforts to deal with the hunger crisis and its effects is channelized immediately, the crisis can be tackled to some extent. Dr. Homoud said that lot of efforts are needed from governments end to improve agriculture productivity, supporting research and development, improving infrastructure and food security early warning systems, helping countries adapting to climate change, and ensuring compatibility between policies on sustainable bio-fuel production and food security
Dr. Homoud contended that Investment in agricultural R&D has stagnated in many developing countries, despite the fact that studies show that improvements in agricultural productivity largely result from new technologies and innovations, which in turn are dependent on investment in research and development. With the ever-increasing scarcity of land and water, and the diversion of land from food to bio fuels production, productivity gains have become the main source of growth in agriculture and the primary means to satisfy the burgeoning demand for food. Such improvements in productivity are all the more important in the context of high food prices. While suggesting his vision and strategy over the issue Dr. Homoud said “well-funded, staffed, and managed agricultural research systems, and new and better-targeted technologies are important prerequisites for successful innovations in agriculture”.
While highlighting the importance and relevance of Spirulina Dr. Homoud further added “In addition to the basic problem of hunger and malnutrition, the use and spread of Spirulina are also being insinuated in case of averting various other diseases like cancer, hay fever, herpes infection, high cholesterol, hives, HIV infection, liver protection, weight loss, tissue degeneration, negative mutations, high urine radioactivity, zinc deficiency diseases, obesity, oral cancer, hypochronic anemia, malaria, diabetes, etc.
