Western Juniper is making its name known across the west as a range reclamation program is underway in central and eastern Oregon. This tree has spread through out the great range lands and is consuming terrific amounts of water. The areas where Juniper has taken hold are so dry that only juniper can survive. There are many ways to control the spread of the Western Juniper. One is to let wildfire rip through the landscape and burn all of the small saplings so that there will be fewer adult trees (the waterhogs). This is never going to be an accepted way to deal with the problem. Too much property at risk. Although, Mother Nature controlled Juniper this way for thousands of years with out problems. It took the meddling of humans to really get this out of balance.
Now the plan to control the water uptake is to cut the Juniper down. This was started decades ago. The preferred method was to push the trees down with bulldozers and then burn the piles of trees in place. Not very ecologically sound when you really think about it.

A better method is to cut and mill the tree into lumber. The greatest asset to this wood is its rot resistance. Juniper is rated at 30 years longer than any other western species untreated in the ground. That means an average life span of about 50 years in contact with soil.
