The owner of the area's top fitness boot camp program, Look Better NAKED Boot Camps, Isaiah White, answers the question of whether cardiovascular training or weight training is more effective for weight & fat loss.
According to Isaiah:
I'm going to share something with you that I hear a lot, when I'm touring prospective members & in introductory PT sessions. It may be something you've heard before, or even thought or said yourself.
When I ask someone who is wanting to lose weight & body fat what their plan is, I'll usually get something to the effect of, "Well, I think I'm just going to do the treadmill and elliptical for a while, to try to lose some of the weight, and then I'll add in the weights to help tone up a little bit."
This is absolutely the worst thing you can do if you truly want to lose weight and body fat. Unequivocally, without question, the worst idea ever. The same thing for those of you that do about 10 minutes of "weights" twice a week and "cardio" five to six times per week.
Now, you may be thinking, "You're way off base on this one! All the women's magazines tell me I've got to cardio my way to losing weight and getting a tight butt; I've got to do that before I start toning my arms!"
Ok, let me explain it to you. When you do weight resistance training, whether that is body weight exercises, dumbbells, barbells, resistance bands, kettlebells, sandbags, or even cable and machine weights, your body burns calories, which is what you want. Burn more calories every day than what you take in (eat), and you will lose weight, period.
You may have heard that you burn more calories doing cardio than you do performing resistance training, and while that statement is misleading, was generally thought to be true for a long time, simply because more time is spent doing cardio than resistance training. However, recent research has shown that you actually burn more calories during intense resistance training than you do during cardio training!!
Ok, so we've established that you burn more calories during resistance training than during cardio training. Even if you broke even on the amount of calories you burned during the 20 minutes of intense resistance training and 45 minutes of cardio (burned the exact same amount), you have another benefit in performing resistance training over cardio training.
Let's say you burn 100 calories during a cardio session. Once that session is over, that's it, you're metabolism returns to normal, no more extra calorie burning.
However, let's say you bust it during resistance training & burn 100 calories during that session. After that session, your metabolism (the rate at which your body burns calories every day), is increased for up to 48 hours after your training session!!
So what does that mean, exactly?
In short, when you perform intense resistance training, you burn more calories during a resistance training session than a cardio session, and the resistance training, if performed intensely enough, causes you to burn more calories after your training session too, for up to 48 hours!!
If you're overall goal is to burn as many calories as possible, which it should be, in order to lose weight and body fat, then you MUST perform resistance training as a priority, and throw in some cardio afterwards or if you have time.
