St. Patty's Day: Life is All About Green

March 15,2013

St. Patrick's Day is a day filled with parties and fun. What happens, however, when you're sober? You can't party like you used to, you can't drink either as a recovering addict. How does one cope?

St. Patty's Day: Life is All About Green

1

St. Patrick's Day is famous for many things; the most obvious is probably the preponderance of the color green. Everything is green”from underwear to socks to hair, fingernails and toenails, to eggs and beer¦

Yes, it's all green, and it's a day filled with parties and fun.

What happens, however, when you're sober? You can't party like you used to, you can't drink, and often you have to be at work or just hanging around the house. Feeling sorry for poor you? Really?

It's time to œman-up, and yes, that includes you ladies out there as well. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, and accept that you are who you are. You are addicted to mind-altering substances, whether it's alcohol, drugs, marijuana (for those who say it isn't a drug), or food, sex, computers, or gambling. You are an addict, and that's okay. You just need to respect the fact, and understand that you can't live the same lifestyle as those who are not addicted to substances.

What it doesn't mean is that you aren't allowed to enjoy yourself, have fun, or go to a party. It only means you need to be strong enough to say œno if you're offered something you know will harm you.

So go out, enjoy your friends and family, eat some corned beef and cabbage, and celebrate with a mighty show of the color green. Remember to maintain that inner-strength to say œNo, and have a sober good time! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
