Millions of Americans wake up each and every day uninsured or underinsured. High premiums and rising costs in health insurance have made access to quality health care a privilege in our society and a mounting concern among the middle and lower classes. Today, I call upon our elected decision makers and leaders in Washington, D.C., to make a conscious effort to pass a comprehensive health care reform bill. In the land established on the idea of opportunity and in a nation founded on the dreams of our forefathers, we have an unalienable right and responsibility as leaders to provide opportunities for Americans to have access to adequate health care for themselves and their families.

For more than 47 years, 100 Black Men of America, Inc. has served the underserved, worked with the underprivileged and assisted communities in need. Each day, our 10,000 members see families without basic health care and we see children who have never seen a doctor since birth. This is the reality of not just some Americans, not just black Americans, but of millions of Americans across this country of different races, creeds and cultures. The choice to change the lives of millions rests with you, our leaders and decision makers.

I speak for the father who was laid off last year, I speak for the mother who has 3 children to feed and I speak for the young man who recently graduated from college. As we sit in an inevitably defining moment in our nation’s history, I urge you to vote with a picture in your mind- the faces of the 31 million Americans who could now be covered by health care with your vote and support of this bill.

Lower and middle class communities nationwide need advocates in Washington to stand in historic fashion and make the health of our country and its citizens a priority. Our elderly need voices in our nation’s capital to speak loud through the halls of the United States Congress and Senate to demand access to affordable quality health care. Small business owners need champions to reduce skyrocketing rates in ever-rising premiums. You can be that advocate, that voice, that champion by voting yes.

Truly stated, united we rise and divided we fall. Now, in this critical hour, we request that leaders make the decision to secure the future health and viability of our great nation. This is a decision that reinvests in the lives of the young and the elderly alike. Vote now for health care reform and vote now to put our families first!
