AAA estimates that over 87 million people will travel more than 50 miles to a friend or relative’s house this holiday season. Around 85 percent of those people will drive. You want to spend the holidays with your family. This includes arriving safe at your destination. But with so many people on the roads and an increased chance for bad weather, staying safe on the road during the holiday season requires a bit of extra care and attention.
Safety Preparations
Avoiding auto accidents during the holidays has a lot in common with avoiding them year round. However, with more cars on the road, your chances for an accident will increase. You can help make sure you are not responsible for an accident by taking some simple steps.
Before you hit the road this holiday season, make sure your car is in good working order. Have all recommended maintenance performed on your vehicle and make sure all of your fluids are topped off. Most importantly, check your tires to ensure proper tread and inflation. This will be very important when driving on icy or snow-packed roadways.
Pack a safety kit for your trip. Remember that weather can change in a heartbeat and you want to be prepared should you be involved in an accident or experience a breakdown. In your kit include things such as gloves, winter hats, blankets, a flashlight and extra batteries, bottled water and nonperishable foods. It is also a good idea to bring along jumper cables.
The way you drive is the most important part of helping keep your family safe. While driving this holiday season, be sure to:
• Leave early and give yourself plenty of time
• Drive at or under the speed limit – this should depend on weather conditions
• Do not text or talk on your cellphone while driving
• Have a passenger manage your GPS
• Be courteous to other drivers – the holidays can be a stressful time for everyone, taking extra time to be a courteous and careful driver will reduce your risk of collision
The most important thing to remember is that you are responsible for the way you drive. Just like every other day, driving around the holidays should be done with great care. It is also important to remember that no matter how safely you drive, other drivers can still cause a collision. If you or a family member is injured in a car accident caused by another driver this holiday season, an experienced car accident attorney can help make sure you are properly compensated.
