Stealing Ambulances For Fun

July 29, 2010

People who steal ambulances put the public in general at unnecessary danger.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) July 29, 2010 -- Stealing an ambulance is a cause for real concern, with four incidents reported in just one week. Some estimates are that over 200 are stolen annually. The majority of the thieves are under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.

After stealing and joy riding an ambulance a teenager recently turned himself in to the police. The ambulance was out on an emergency call in Atlanta, Georgia, at the time.

Eighteen-year old Frank Howard stole an ambulance while its crew was responding to a call in an apartment complex, said investigators. The paramedics had left the motor running and the ambulance unlocked.

The man dressed up in ambulance gear and drove the ambulance 2 blocks, before running it off the road and crashing it. The vehicle was located soon afterwards in a ditch on the side of the road.
Howard will face auto theft after being held in the Fulton County Jail.

Two drunks stole an ambulance that was parked outside Upstate University Hospital in May 2010.
Before police were able to apprehend him, the 21 year old driver, Brandon Ray, drove the ambulance at a high speed along Walnut Avenue, near Syracuse University.

While paramedics were on duty in April 2009, a Houston ambulance was stolen. The driver smashed into a number of vehicles, including a police car and another ambulance, which had been blocking traffic for a police vice bust at a club.

A stolen ambulance was the cause of a six-car crash in Everston in March 2009, Chicago, when it ran a red light. Eight people were wounded. The ambulance had been stolen from outside a nursing home.

In 1996 vandals stole an ambulance from outside a house in Stevenage, Hertfordshire and drove it into a car-park wall. They also vandalized life-saving equipment. The ambulance had been on its way to pick up a pregnant woman and transfer her to hospital. She was forced to wait a further 20 minutes before a replacement ambulance could arrive.

A fully equipped ambulance costs around $175,000. The loss of an ambulance in rural areas in particular, puts the public at significant risk, often taking months to have a replacement back in service. Funding of ambulances is also a major concern for the community.
