Stopping Musical Illiteracy Among Guitarists

December 23, 2009

Even though the guitar is the most popular instrument on the planet, it also has the dubious distinction of having the biggest percentage of musically illiterate players. It's time to stop this trend.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) December 23, 2009 -- Expert guitarists ban together to form online course designed to promote musical literacy among guitar players.

There's a real epidemic going on in today's guitar world. Anyone that is familiar with the guitar is also aware that most guitarists out there know ONLY how to read tab/tablature, and don't have a clue as to why and how to read guitar sheet music.

At first glance this might seem like a trivial subject, but digging deeper reveals the ramifications that inability to read music has upon guitarists.

“It's like wanting to be a car engineer but being unable to read a blueprint” says Ben Dressen, the editor, guitar teacher and performer behind a new, innovative sheet music reading course.

Tablature presents the mechanical movements one should do, in most cases without rhythm. The reader has no understanding of the actual notes they are playing because tablature will only show them number corresponding to the frets they must play. Since in most cases tab has no rhythm, the student must listen to the recording and mimic the rhythm he hears, which in most cases he gets wrong.

“You wouldn't call yourself a real guitarist just because you can play Guitar Hero. The same goes for reading sheet music... You can't call yourself a real musician if you're just reading tab” says Ben.

“Music reading is considered boring and hard by most guitarists” adds Ben. “The truth is that this was the way most music courses/books were presented. A book by itself just won't cut it. The only way to get results was to go to a teacher. Fortunately modern advances make the idea of an online course possible for those that can't afford or don't have the time flexibility for formal lessons.”

“It's vital to promote sheet music reading skills. Music isn't just fret numbers. Did you know that the guitar is one of the few instruments that has such a large percentage of musicians that really don't know how to read music? This is ironic considering its popularity. Knowing fret numbers do not equal music. We need to get guitarists interested. It's no wonder most bands need a producer in the studio to fix their songs... and it's no wonder most producers have piano experience and can read sheet music. In today's competitive guitar market, musical illiteracy is something that should be addressed by any guitarist that wants to have a career in music.” states Ben.

With more than 20 years experience in teaching, editing and publishing classical music for the guitar, Ben Dressen co-opted his friend and associate Sor Harris, a classical guitarist and composer with experience and TV credits, to construct a course that uses modern techniques to teach players how to read guitar sheet music.

RezZonator.com is the home of RezZonator Publishing which produces quality e-sheet music for the classical guitar. It is a company founded by classical & electric guitarists dedicated to stimulating interest in musical knowledge as it applies to the guitar. As such RezZonator.com is proud to announce it's “Learning To Read Sheet Music Like A Pro” online course, aimed at bringing musical literacy to guitar players, while being fun at the same time.
