When Communist Pathet Lao Forces liberated Laos in 1975, Professor Pheng and three other tenured colleagues were dismissed from their teaching positions at the university and sent to work on a communal farm. Pheng had already decided to stay with his country no matter what happened, but four years later, when several of his coworkers were arrested and sent to a remote northern province for re-education, he knew he was next. So, on a dark, moonless night, he abandoned his home, livestock, and small orchard, and pushed the pirogue carrying his wife and five daughters off the Lao shore, heading across the Mekong River to Thailand.

In the hot, crowded refugee camp, Pheng learned about God’s love, and he soon accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. The night before his family left camp to emigrate to Canada, he and his wife came to the Kaetzel’s home to say good-bye. With moist eyes, he said, “Missionary, if I’d never had to leave Laos, I’d never have met Jesus.”

227 pages in length, Bending With the Bamboo: Memoirs of an American Missionary Family's Life in Laos During the Vietnam War is being aggressively promoted to appropriate markets with a focus on the autobiography and personal memoirs category. With U.S. wholesale distribution through Ingram and Baker & Taylor, and pervasive online availability through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and elsewhere, Bending With the Bamboo meets consumer demand through both retail and library markets with a suggested retail price of $16.95.

Additionally, Bending With the Bamboo can be ordered by retailers or wholesalers for the maximum trade discount price set by the author in quantities of ten or more from the Outskirts Press Direct bookstore at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore.

About the author:

From age ten, Winnie Kaetzel knew that God wanted her to be a missionary. Her dream came true in 1957 when she sailed with her husband, Ollie, and ten-month-old son, Tommy, to Laos as missionaries with the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Sharing the Good News with folks in a strange language and raising a family in an alien culture while war spilled over the mountains of their adopted country from Vietnam was a challenging task for the Kaetzels. Bending With the Bamboo describes the task and exhilaration of building God’s Kingdom cross-culturally and how that experience reshaped the Kaetzels’ personal lives. The Kaetzels, now retired, live in Longview Texas.
