Patriot Subaru in Saco, Maine does more than just recycle paper to be considered a green business. The 8 year old business has a commitment that stretches to all corners of the property, including a 20' x 30' vegetable garden. "We looked at every single aspect of our business, and we found numerous ways to improve our efficiency, as well as do things that would make us better stewards of our environment." says Adam Arens, owner of Patriot Subaru. "We recycle everything, from the shipping peanuts that come in to us, to 100% of our waste oil. We replaced our outdoor lighting with efficient LED lights, We don't use balloons in the showroom, we use hanging plants. Every employee contributes in some way to make their department greener." In fact, Patriot Subaru received a small business national award from Energy Star in 2010 for their all-around efforts, the first business in Maine to ever be recognized for this award.

This extended to the desire by a number of employees to dedicate an area as a gardening spot in the summer of 2010. Greg Brown, Parts Manager, tilled up a 10x15 plot and constructed some wire fencing. Marketing Director Tom Talbott, who raises alpacas, brought in 5 yards of composted manure, and many others on the staff pitched in to water and weed. "It took off", says Brown. "The crop for the first year was quite good. Beans, radish, squash, lettuce. The rule was, if you weed, you eat." he says with a laugh. In 2011, Brown doubled the size, and replaced the chicken wire with a tidy white picket fence.
Customers too got into the action. "We had customers who enjoyed spending some time in the garden pulling weeds, rather than sitting in the customer service area. They were thrilled to take home a nice big summer squash and a head of lettuce." says Glen Reed, Service Manager. "They're thanking us, not for fixing their car, but for the letting them in the garden. And we're saying, glad you had a good time! That's a little different!"
So, next time you're in Saco, Maine, and you want a V-8, be sure to specify whether it's a car or a vegetable you're after. At Patriot Subaru, you can get both!
