Mark Macdonald from Auckland, New Zealand, last week released an important article on why it is essential for multilevel marketers to show respect to other peoples opinions based upon chapter 2 from section 3 of Dale Carnegie’s ‘How to win friends and influence people’ book. The article discussed why it is essential for people deploying multilevel marketing to be effective at building relationships and respecting other people’s opinions is key to developing these relationships.
“The best way for multilevel marketers to lose a potential customer is to say they are wrong!” replied Mark when questioned on why he sees this as an important article.
“It never helps a situation if you say someone is wrong. In their mind they are right otherwise they wouldn’t have said it. They have made a stand in what they believe is right. If you state outright that you think they are wrong the other party will argue with you because you are now challenging them. Natural survival instincts will kick in and they will disagree with you no matter what you say.”
The article highlights the fact that you should remember that you cannot guarantee that you are right. It is often simply a matter of opinion and right or wrong can be simply different shades of grey.
When asked what the issue is when you contradict someone Mark replied “If you cannot be certain that you are right then why would you state that you are? By doing this you are forcing the other person to be wrong and this is not a good thing to do. They will challenge you because they have to in order to save face, and keep their pride in tack.”
“When you do challenge someone it can put your whole relationship with this person at risk. If you damage someone’s pride you are making it personal, and it may take quite a while before you have rebuilt your relationship back up. This is very important when you are a multilevel marketer because your whole business model is based upon relationships.”
The article discusses how people often go out of their way to prove they are right and emotions kick it. Then people are not willing to back down and the whole situation gets out of hand. And when this situation occurs people should question themselves why do they need to prove themself right. Would it be better to simply agree to disagree now and come back to the situation when the emotions are not so heated.
“My video on this chapter is also worth a watch on how I got to know my staff and customers when I was a corporate leader”.
