PORTLAND, Ore. – June 1, 2011 – Sunset High School’s Bands have been nominated for a $25,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant. The grant would be used to help the school’s bands travel to Orlando, Florida, in April 2012 and compete in the All-American Music Festival. Voting for the grant begins today, June 1, and goes through June 30. To become a finalist and winner, the SHS Bands need to be among the top 15 voted leaders in the $25,000 grant category. The SHS bands are asking for community supporters to make this possible by voting daily at: www.refresheverything.com/samba.
“We are thrilled to have to have this opportunity by Pepsi to raise funds for our band program,” said Marvin Cruickshank, president of the Sunset Apollo Marching Band & Auxiliary (SAMBA), the non-profit parent booster club for Sunset’s band programs. “Our goal is to make it possible for all of our 80 to 100 band and colorguard members to go on this trip, regardless of financial circumstances. A $25,000 grant from Pepsi would make this goal a lot easier to achieve.”
The All-American Music Festival is a long-standing festival that has been awarding musical prowess in high school and middle school student music groups for almost 30 years. The Sunset bands scheduled to compete in the 2012 festival include the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and the entire Sunset Apollo Marching Band & Auxiliary. The cost for travel and participation in the festival is estimated at $1,500 per student. The $25,000 grant from Pepsi would reduce this amount by at least $250 per student. Voting is available at www.refresheverything.com/samba.
