Harbor Homes was a leading supplier of disaster relief housing in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and it is one of only four companies that holds a coveted $153 million contract with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The company is also currently building transitional shelters (or T-Shelters) in Haiti in response to last spring’s earthquake that has displaced nearly 2 million residents.

According to Marketing Director Matt Williams, “Certain weaknesses in the disaster management system became apparent during the response to Hurricane Katrina. Everyone has heard about the various problems with FEMA trailers giving off noxious fumes. This was a result of the post hoc response to a rapidly emerging need to house tens of thousands of displaced Gulf residents. One step that the Department of Homeland Security has taken to ensure that this does not happen in the future is to establish contract relationships with companies that have demonstrated a capability and capacity to produce products that meet federal indoor air quality standards in sufficient quantities to meet emerging demand. Harbor Homes is one of the few companies in the nation that has met these stringent requirements.”

Harbor Homes launched the Intrepid StructuresTM brand earlier this year as a natural extension to its existing core business of disaster relief housing. According to Harbor Homes CEO Lucas Stewart, “We recognized that many of the structures that we were building for disaster relief could be elaborated upon for deployment as field support structures for use in the oil and gas exploration and minerals mining industries as well as in support of disaster relief efforts around the globe. Intrepid StructuresTM represents our company’s response to this need. In addition to various domestic installations, we have deployed modular bunk houses, man camps, latrines and shower houses, wastewater treatment facilities, desalination equipment, recreation and commercial laundry facilities, and commercial kitchens in Sierra Leone, Haiti, and Antigua.”
