Tacoma City Ballet’s The Nutcracker Opens This Weekend

December 9, 2011 Tacoma, WA – After months of rehearsals, opening weekend for Tacoma City Ballet’s The Nutcracker has finally arrived. Performances this weekend are both Saturday and Sunday at 3:00pm. The Nutcracker lasts a total of two hours, including a 20 minute intermission. Tickets are selling rapidly, but good seats are still available for all shows at this time.

The sets, props, and costumes for Tacoma City Ballet’s beautiful, historic, Russian production of The Nutcracker moved into the Pantages Theater early in the week. Dancers have spent the last few days practicing on the stage and working within the set for the first time this season. Members of the Tacoma City Ballet Company have been rehearsing in their beautiful studios in the Merlino Arts Center since late summer, and children in the production began rehearsals the first weekend of October. However, yesterday was the first time many of the cast members got to experience a rehearsal onstage. “It’s a little different, working with the sets and costumes, and without the mirrors,” said new cast member, Marni Graveline, “but at the same time, it’s so exciting to be in the theater!”

Tacoma City Ballet’s The Nutcracker is set apart as the sole production in the area to follow the story, scenic design, costuming and choreography as it was originally created by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov accompanied by Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky’s original score. The Nutcracker will once again be performed with live accompaniment by the Northwest Sinfonietta in the grand setting of the historic Pantages Theater in downtown Tacoma .
