Take in the explosive Boun Bang Fai festival near Pattaya

Anyone staying in Pattaya at the end of May could consider travelling inland to experience the Boun Bang Fai festival.

(Free-Press-Release.com) April 25, 2010 --People who have booked accommodation in Pattaya during May will have an opportunity to experience one of the louder festivals to take place in Thailand.

Anyone who decides that the Boun Bang Fai festival is one for them will need to travel inland to northern Thailand for the event.

Held each year, the two-day celebrations sees Buddhists fire rockets into the sky in a rain-making ceremony.

According to the religion's tradition, shooting home-made rockets into the air is believed to "promote rain and bring water to the rice fields", Southeast Asia reveals.

The travel website also notes that an element of competition creeps into the festivities, with each rocket owner trying to outdo the last by reaching the highest point in the sky.

People staying in accommodation in Thailand may find that this light-hearted event is a great way to spend a day or two in one of the country's more rural areas.

Ahead of the rocket-firing celebrations, a ceremony is held at the local temple in the morning to pray for rain on the rice fields.

Over the border in Laos, similar festivities take place throughout May, with the dates of the local Boun Bang Fai revelry staggered to allow a greater number of people to take part and observe the event.
