Technology addiction: Plugged in and checked out!

New Jersey, New Jersey, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) January 18, 2011 -- For the first time in the US, a county government agency will fund training on the impact and intervention of Technology Addiction. "This is the first time we are aware of, that any government agency is funding this specific type of training," said John Kriger, President of Kriger Consulting, a Burlington County consulting firm.

The funding, provided by The Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders through the Office of Human Services, Alcohol & Drug Abuse Unit, addresses the excessive, compulsive and addictive use of technology contributing to reduced family communications, decreased face-to-face interactions, and distracted students and workers. "These are the stories we hear over and over again from parents, teachers, managers and business leaders," said Kriger.

"We are not saying that technology is a problem. It is the way it is used by some that creates this issue." While Technology Addiction has yet to be officially sanctioned as a disorder by the American Psychiatric Association, "The signs are all there," Kriger stated. "When the elements describing the criteria for substance abuse and dependence are compared with the impact of technology, the comparison fits; and its frightening!"

The funding will also provide sessions on Current Adolescent Trends: For Adults Only!, Family Dynamics of Addiction, and courses on community empowerment for prevention. All sessions are provided free of charge to adults throughout the County.
